As artists exploring contemporary, improvised, experimental, multimedia or participative music, we are often faced with the dilemma of how to design and present supporting material to inform and engage (new) listeners.
Rather than seeking to explain music solely through composer biographies, world premieres, or discussions of form and main themes, Charles MacInnes introduces strategies for giving listeners insights into the actions of music:

• what people do
• how they communicate and react
• where this takes place
• the decisions that are made collectively

An understanding of these processes reinforces the importance of new works, sounds and performance spaces, particularly in a world where choices are increasingly driven by algorithms.

Charles MacInnes began his career as an orchestral trombonist in Australia before gradually moving into improvisation and composition. He completed a PhD in 2018 at Monash University developing a framework for bringing improvisation to the foreground of the contemporary art music ensemble. He specialises in designing and presenting interactive music workshops for all, and regularly shares his work in this field at conferences around the world. He currently leads workshops in Community Engagement and Education at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and is musical director of Ensemble Density.
